Day 145 – Concerns about vomiting

We went to the clinic for a weight follow-up.  Ami’s weight was 9 lbs 4 oz.  Dr. H said Ami was making her own curve, so we should not be too worried and should continue breastfeeding and syringe feeding as we had been doing.

I expressed some concerns about Ami’s vomiting.  Shortly after we resumed syringe feeding, Ami started to vomit rather frequently – at least once every few days.  It happened when she took breast milk just a little bit too much or she took in some air with the milk.  Dr. H asked if vomiting happened when or after Ami cried hard, to which I answered no.  Ami was always calm before she vomited.  Each time it was very clear she was trying hard to hold down her stomach content but was not able to.  What made me more worried was the amount and the way she vomited.  She threw up at least 50 ml at a time, as if the entire breast milk she took during that feeding came back.  And she vomited quite forcefully, not only through her mouth but her nostrils as well.  I tried my best not to overfeed her, but it was hard to see any signs in Ami how full she was feeling.

Dr. H said that her vomiting was not due to pyloric stenosis, even though it was quite forceful.  If it was pyloric stenosis, she said, vomiting should happen after every feeding.  She presumed that her low muscle tone made it hard for Ami to keep what she took.
